WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) voted with House Republicans on Tuesday to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for refusing to comply with federal immigration laws. The two articles of impeachment included willful and systematic refusal to comply with the law and breach of public trust.

“Our nation’s borders have been overrun with historic rates of illegal crossings, illegal drugs, human trafficking and criminals who are infiltrating our communities, and it’s time to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable for violating his oath to defend the Constitution and this great nation,” said Congressman Rogers, Dean of the House. “We have strong immigration laws on the books that Secretary Mayorkas has ignored for the last three years, threatening the safety of Americans in every community if allowed to remain in office.”

The impeachment follows a nearly year-long investigation conducted by the House Committee on Homeland Security. The investigation unveiled clear evidence that Secretary Mayorkas is “chiefly responsible for the chaos and devastation that has unfolded over the past three years,” including implementation of a mass catch-and-release scheme, violating detention requirements and misusing parole authority.

In addition to the impeachment, House Republicans passed the Secure the Border Act of 2023, the strongest border security bill in American history. However, Senate Democrats have refused to bring the legislation to a vote.

Over the last three years, there have been over 8.3 million illegal crossings nationwide, including at least 1.7 million who evaded U.S. Border Patrol. The Biden Administration admitted that 40 percent of illegal immigrants released on parole just before the end of the Title 42 pandemic border policy, never checked in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as required.
