Special Update From Hal

Dear Friend,

Thirty-two years ago, we didn't have ability to instantly communicate the happenings of southern and eastern Kentucky and Washington D.C. across the world. Thanks to this new age of social media, we can now interactively communicate our common interests and concerns.

A couple of years ago, I joined the world of Facebook and today, I am happy to announce the launch of my new Twitter account. Through Twitter and Facebook, you can keep up with legislative materials specific to southern and eastern Kentucky, be the first to read my news releases, keep up with information about upcoming events, and spotlights on local organizations and residents.

NATIONAL Rx DRUG ABUSE SUMMIT

Last week, I had the privilege of being a part of the three-day Inaugural National Rx Drug Abuse Summit, hosted by Operation UNITE in Florida. Approximately 750 people joined together on a national stage for the first time to discuss the prescription drug abuse epidemic, as well as potential solutions and efforts to combat the wide-spread problem. The U.S. Drug Czar, Gil Kerlikowske calls it a "public health crisis" and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) called it the fasted growing epidemic in the nation, killing more people each year through overdoses than any other accidental death. If you missed the summit, you will soon be able to watch videos and listen to audio recordings of the sessions online at http://nationalrxdrugabusesummit.org.

Today, I presented a Congressional Tribute on behalf of Operation UNITE and the non-profit organization's President & CEO, Karen Kelly for taking on the enormous task of uniting federal, state and local leaders to attack the prescription drug abuse epidemic head-on. The Summit modeled UNITE's multi-pronged approach, by discussing law enforcement, treatment and education, in addition to the struggles that employers face and the responsibility of prescribers and pharmacists.

The summit highlighted the amazing grassroots efforts of community members and leaders across southern and eastern Kentucky. I am proud of the thousands of Kentuckians, who reject our region's ill-fated title "Painkiller Capital" and have decided to get off the sidelines and firmly stand with drug-free families. Every day, we are helping addicts get the treatment they need, we're educating our young people, and we've made it clear that it's time for drug pushers and rogue doctors to get out. The fight is far from over, but together, we are making a difference.

Congratulations to every UNITE staff member, coalition member, school club member and volunteer for your daily efforts in the fight against drugs. Keep up the good work!                                                    ---
