Congressman Rogers Sworn-in for 23rd Term Serving Kentucky’s Fifth Congressional District
Jan 03 2025
WASHINGTON, DC (January 3, 2025) – U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) was sworn in for his 23rd consecutive term representing Kentucky’s Fifth Congressional District. As Dean of the House, Congressman Rogers also had the privilege of swearing-in the 56th Speaker of the House Mike Johnson from Louisiana.
“It is an honor to continue serving the people of Southern and Eastern Kentucky, and echoing their voices on Capitol Hill. We have a lot of work to do as we look ahead for the 119th Congress. With President-elect Donald Trump moving back into the White House and Republicans leading both the House and Senate, we have the opportunity to restore American values and get our nation back on track. For starters, we must secure our borders, make America affordable again, and courageously stand firm against our adversaries,” said Congressman Rogers. “Speaker Johnson has earned the respect and trust of this Congress by navigating our House with a historically slim Republican majority, and I applaud his bold leadership during this critical time in our country.”
Congressman Rogers gave the following remarks before swearing-in Speaker Johnson on the House Floor on Friday:
“Today, we celebrate our shared American self-rule. When our founding fathers rejected calls for an American king and chose a bold and innovative government of self-rule, it was met by opposition of the world’s monarchies. They said you can’t govern yourself – you need a king; self-rule is only a dream. Our founders said, you know they’re right…it’s the American dream. Now, it’s our dream. The speaker of the United States House of Representatives is the crucial protector and promoter of self-rule – the keeper of the dream. Now, we have elected you sir, to carry on our bold experiment in democracy and self-rule.”
During his remarks to the U.S. House of Representatives, Speaker Johnson said he was committed to extending the Trump Tax Cuts, restoring America’s energy dominance, reinstating fear in our enemies, and realigning our commitment to peace through strength.
In their first official action, House Members voted on the rules for the 119th Congress, including a change to require a minimum of nine Members to offer a motion to vacate the House Speaker, up from only one Member currently required. The vote passed on party lines.
