Monticello, KY – U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) joined state and local officials for a ground-breaking ceremony at his high school alma mater, the former Wayne County High School’s AJ Lloyd Building. The building will be renovated into a new outdoor community center and farmer’s market. Another building on-site will become the new home of Provalus, a technology company that will be able to expand from 140 to 200 jobs in Monticello.

The estimated cost to renovate the AJ Lloyd Building is $4.7 million. Congressman Rogers secured $4 million in federal Community Project Funding in 2024. 

“This historic building in my home county is a landmark in my memories. It’s the place where teachers, friends and community leaders molded my beliefs, work ethic, and inspired my desire to serve others. This building has served countless families in Wayne County well over the years, and now, it will be a recreational centerpiece for the community, with a technology hub next door,” said Congressman Rogers, Dean of the House. “The dual purpose of this property paves the way for more jobs in Wayne County, and a beautiful place for local families to enjoy for generations.” 

“It’s a great time to be in Monticello! When this historic building is renovated, it will honor the past and make way for future opportunities. We also recruited Provalus to invest in our workforce, and we’re excited to give them space to expand and add more jobs on this property as well,” said Kenny Catron, Mayor of Monticello. “We really appreciate Congressman Hal Rogers and our state leaders for working with us to secure the funding to move this project forward for the people of Monticello.” 

“Mayor Catron and I had only been in office for a couple months when we first learned about Provalus’ interest in moving to Wayne County – so we immediately went to work. This whole county pulled together from the beginning, and we cannot stress how great it was to see so many people unite to support this entire project,” said Scott Gehring, Wayne County Judge Executive. “Congressman Rogers and our state leaders have been with us from the get-go and we’re excited for what this project is going to do for the community.” 

The estimated cost to renovate the additional building for Provalus is $6.6 million. More than $4.1 million has been secured through state funding, along with a $1 million Community Development Block Grant, and an investment from Provalus. Additional grant funding is pending. 

“We had no jobs coming to Wayne County for a long time, so we really pulled together to spread the word that we are open for business. One of the things I like to say is, ‘this ain’t your mama’s Monticello.’ We are doing better and I’m looking forward to the things that are going to be taking place in the next decade,” said State Rep. Ken Upchurch. “This building will make Monticello a destination and I’m proud to be a small part of it.”
