New facility will expand advanced workforce training and career opportunities across Southern and Eastern Kentucky 

Somerset, KY (Aug. 24, 2026) - The Center for Rural Development today celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of a new Regional Training Center that will expand workforce development, provide advanced training opportunities, and strengthen the skilled workforce across Southern and Eastern Kentucky.

The new 12,500-square-foot facility, with a budget of approximately $5 million, will expand access to specialized technical training in high-demand fields, giving participants hands-on experience with modern equipment, industry-recognized curricula, and opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials.

“The Center’s new regional training hub will elevate our workforce to be qualified for more aerospace and defense technologies, giving our people the space to grow and thrive in their own hometowns,” said U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers, who helped create The Center for Rural Development 30 years ago. “Business owners across our district have told me that we have the best workforce in the country, and as we expand workforce skills, we can recruit new industries.”  

The Regional Training Center will focus on preparing individuals for careers in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, aviation, electronics, and defense-related industries.

“This is a monumental day and major milestone for The Center for Rural Development as we continue our commitment to building a stronger workforce and bringing specialized, high-quality training closer to home,” said Lonnie Lawson, President and CEO. “This facility will equip people with the skills and industry connections they need for rewarding careers while helping regional employers build the skilled workforce they need to grow.”  

Advanced Manufacturing Training
The Center for Rural Development will partner with the eKentucky Advanced Manufacturing Institute (eKAMI) to provide hands-on advanced manufacturing instruction modeled after eKAMI’s successful workforce training programs.
 
Training opportunities are expected to include:

• CNC machining, programming, machine setup and operation
• Hands-on instruction using CNC mills and CNC lathes
• CAD/CAM and Mastercam programming and design
• Precision measurement, inspection and quality control, including Coordinate Measuring Machine Technology
• Robotics, automation and advanced manufacturing processes
• Preparation for industry-recognized manufacturing credentials
• Career pathways in CNC machining, programming, quality control, robotics and other advanced manufacturing occupations

Aerospace and Defense Training
The facility will also establish a comprehensive Aerospace and Defense Technician Training Program designed to prepare participants for skilled technical careers within the growing aerospace, aviation, and defense sectors.
 
Training opportunities are expected to include:

• Electronics assembly, soldering, inspection and testing
• Wire-harness fabrication and high-reliability electronics
• Mechanical and aerospace assembly
• Composites and advanced manufacturing techniques
• CAD/CAM and technical design
• Quality systems, testing and inspection
• Opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications and credentials
• Preparation for careers in aerospace manufacturing, electronics, assembly, testing, quality assurance and related technical fields

The aerospace initiative is being developed with input and expertise from regional and industry partners, including Morehead State University and SpaceTEC, with the goal of creating training pathways aligned with the skills and standards required by today's aerospace and defense employers.
 
The Regional Training Center represents another investment by The Center for Rural Development in expanding economic opportunity and connecting Kentucky workers with the training needed to compete for high-quality careers while helping employers build the talent pipeline necessary for continued growth.
 
Construction on the advanced-manufacturing facility is expected to be completed in September 2027.
