SOMERSET, Ky. -- U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) met with local leaders and first responders in the Pulaski County Emergency Operations Center's new "Situation Room" to get an update on recovery operations and mounting costs to rebuild.
"Your response to the storm has been incredible and I applaud you for taking quick action to help families and businesses alike. I want to assure you that I am here to help with the long-term rebuilding efforts," said Congressman Rogers. "The burden of debris removal and rebuilding falls heavily on our local leaders who are here day in and day out. Public Assistance from FEMA will be vital to reimbursing the costs that the city and county have endured."
Chris Mason, Director of Pulaski County Emergency Operations Center, estimated Pulaski County's cleanup costs to be more than $1.4 million and rising as work continues.
"The Department of Homeland Security is reviewing the state's assessments for Public Assistance, and I am hopeful it will be approved soon," said Congressman Rogers.
So far, FEMA has disbursed more than $333,000 in Individual Assistance to assist families in Pulaski County. More than 325 individuals have registered for aid from FEMA thus far.
Mason and county officials demonstrated the interactive wall in the situation room that allows emergency responders to see areas in need and respond with more accuracy. The wall also provides real-time weather radar data, to aid in local storm alerts and emergency response.
"I want to reiterate how crucial the Congressman's office was in our communications plan for the county's storm response," said John Alexander, Communications Director for Pulaski County Government. "The Judge's Office was in constant contact with our federal, state and local partners from day one and each one was extremely helpful in getting out as much information as possible."
